Stregbredpande (Thymelicus lineola)    Bredpander (Hesperiidae)    [butterfly]    24735
Essex Skipper (gb)   Dorada Puntas Negras (es)   Mindre Tåtelsmygare (se)      Synonyms: Tåtelsmygare (se)
Measurements:
WS: 22-27mm
Generations:
1
Flight period:
JFMAMJJASOND
se
Identification:
Sexes mostly similar, but the males show a characteristic line of scent-scales seen as a narrow dark streak running horizontally on the upper forewing close to the basis.

Compared to Stor Bredpande (Ochlodes sylvanus) [Large Skipper ~ Dorada Difusa ~ Ängssmygare] with which it often flies (in eastern Denmark) it is smaller and looks brighter and cleaner, both when sitting and flying. The wings look more rounded toward the end and they have no pale spots as Stor Bredpande does.

More difficult to distinguish from Skråstregbredpande (Thymelicus sylvestris) [Small Skipper ~ Dorada Línea Larga ~ Större Tåtelsmygare] which is sympatric in western Denmark (Jylland og Fyn). See that species.
Distribution:
Europe, North Africa to Central Asia; introduced to N America.
Habitat:
Mostly dry grass fields with broad-leaved grasses. Or roadsides.
Behavior:
Often more together and foraging with Stor Bredpande (O. sylvanus).
Status:
Widespread in Denmark and common. Spreading toward the north, now present around Oslo in Norway and in Sweden north of Stockholm.
Host plants:
Almindelig Kvik (Elymus repens) [Couch Grass ~ Grama ~ Kvickrot]
Eng-Rottehale (Phleum pratense) [Timothy ~ Timotej]
Skov-Stilkaks (Brachypodium sylvaticum) [False-Brome ~ Lastón ~ Lundskafting]
Bakke-Stilkaks (Brachypodium pinnatum) [Heath False-Brome ~ Backskafting]
Feeding plants:
Tidsler [Thistles ~ Cardos ~ Tistlar]
Comment:
Normally flies a few weeks later than Stor Bredpande (Ochlodes sylvanus) [Large Skipper ~ Dorada Difusa ~ Ängssmygare].

Imago. Han. Even though the black line on the forewing looks very narrow, and only visible on the right wing, it must be the sex brand, indicating a male.

Not certain about the sex without seeing the upper side of the forewing.
