2019-10-01 Kalvebod Fælled, Denmark A sick animal found in the dry weeds at the newly created Byskoven south of the rubbish dump on the far western side of the area. I found it trapped between two dry weed stalks, but when I got it free, it was not able to move normally, as you can see. It didn't look injured, and I suspected some kind of neurological disease. After the video, I picked it up and stood with it for almost half an hour, not knowing what to do with it. It calmed down, which was a relief to experience. But eventually I put it down again, and decided to return via Amager Nature Center, hoping they would know what to do. They weren't in their hare rescuing mode this afternoon, letting me know that had it been the guy I talked too, who had found it, he certainly knew what he would have done. You know. But I couldn't. To support their non-involvement decision they told me there was an outbreak of tularemia (harepest) in circulation, why it would probably die sooner than later anyway, suspecting that this was the cause to it's strange behavior. I was later told by the veterinarian authorities that this was not true, but European Brown Hare Syndrome was a probability with known recent incidents. Never got a description of the symptoms, though, why I still don't know what had struck this ill-faring creature. I accepted the disease explanation, why I decided not to do any further. Not humane to let if suffer, or not humane to give up hope before the final breath. |
