Mexican Cottontail (Sylvilagus cunicularius) or Eastern Cottontail (Sylvilagus floridanus).
Both are present in the area, but from the little information I've been able to find online about rabbit and hare identification, the amount of black on the tip of the ear is the only useful pelage character. But comparing photos, I've not been able to detect a reliable difference, and prefer to leave the animal unidentified.
The animal was found at 2500+ masl, but this is within the altitude range of both species.

Mexican Cottontail - Conejo de Monte (Sylvilagus cunicularius) or Eastern Cottontail - Conejo Serrano (Sylvilagus floridanus).
Both are present in the area, but from the little information I've been able to find online about rabbit identification, the amount of black on the tip of the ear is the only useful pelage character. But comparing photos, I've not been able to detect a reliable difference, and prefer to leave the animal unidentified. And it really bothers me that an ambitious resource like naturalista.mx excels completely in their lack of any kind of useful identification descriptions and, especially, explanations about how to distinguish between similar looking species. Almost useless it is. So frustrating.
The animal was found at 3000 masl, but this is within the altitude range of both species.
