Puente Jarácuaro. Different individuals. Harsh call and the unstructured up-and-down warbling song. Also: rec 2: Marsh Wren, Red-winged Blackbird, Common Gallinule, Cassin's Kingbird. rec 3: Marsh Wren. Endemic |

Black-polled Yellowthroat (Geothlypis speciosa) monotypic Sorthovedet Gulstrube ~ Mascarita del Lerma ~ Lermagulhake 2018-10-06 Lago Pátzcuaro (mic), Mexico
♂. Puente Jarácuaro. Adult male. Hereby declared my favorite yellowthroat in Mexico. The combination of yellow, black and orange-ocher is sublime. Almost gives me associations in direction of Siberian Accentor, which I regrettably still haven't seen, why the yellowthroat has to serve as worthy compensation meanwhile. Endemic |

Puente Jarácuaro. Female type. Generally darker than females of Common Yellowthroat, but overlap occurs. Black-polled, however, has black legs compared to pinkish, which can also be appreciated here. Endemic |

Black-polled Yellowthroat (Geothlypis speciosa) monotypic Sorthovedet Gulstrube ~ Mascarita del Lerma ~ Lermagulhake 2018-10-06 Lago Pátzcuaro (mic), Mexico
♂. Puente Jarácuaro. Adult male. Unique among the yellowthroats with the dark colors and the black hood. Especially the dark wings seem characteristic as well as the black legs. I counted 16 birds, seen and heard, in a small area, thus, knowing how extensive the reed bed is, I expect the population to be healthy here. Notice that at first glance it is not impossible to confuse this bird with a male Lesser Goldfinch, when only seen from the front. That species is also present in good numbers in the area, though probably not common in between the reeds as such. Endemic |

Male, unmistakable. But a young male without sooty black forehead. This is gained next spring, probably by wear. This bird is the jewel of the Centranl Mexican highland marshes, and the most elegant of all the yellowthroats in Mexico. Endemic |
