Common Loon (Gavia immer) monotypic Islom ~ Colimbo Común ~ Svartnäbbad Islom 2010-11-07 Rosarito (bcn), Mexico Adult bird in basic plumage. The black bill tip and the white spots on the wing indicate this. Difficult to judge the eye color which on the adult has to be bright red. |

Common Loon (Gavia immer) monotypic Islom ~ Colimbo Común ~ Svartnäbbad Islom 2010-11-11 Estero Punta Banda (bcn), Mexico 1cy bird. The bill only has a dark culmen. The rest of the bill is uniform grayish on the young bird. Here the scaly back with broad whitish fringes to the feather is also obvious. |

Common Loon (Gavia immer) monotypic Islom ~ Colimbo Común ~ Svartnäbbad Islom 2015-11-06 Presa Las Pintitas (Guadalajara), Mexico Juvenile bird with finely scaled back and bright bill without black tip. Also rather brownish neck. A big surprise to find this lonely bird, and especially on a day without any waterfowl besides the locale ones. It foraged almost constantly during my stay, only staying above the surface for a longer period, as seen in the video, while it was preening. Incredible that a lake like this, with polluted water and large quantities of trash floating around, and in the middle of the city, could attract this elegant bird. Rather rare species in general to find inland in Mexico. My first in Jalisco. |

Map
Common Loon (Gavia immer) monotypic Islom ~ Colimbo Común ~ Svartnäbbad Islom 2015-11-16 Presa Las Pintitas (Guadalajara), Mexico 2 juvenile birds. The rear bird on pic 1 is the same as in pic 2, and the front bird the same as the one in pic 3. Would expect that one of the birds is the same as the one from Nov. 6th, and in that case it would have to be bird in pic 2, which looks most similar. However, there seem to be some differences in the head and on the neck, so perhaps we are talking about 3 different individuals..!? |
