Adult male with the red crown spot. Compared to Golden-fronted Woodpecker, Gila shows a more beige ground color, and does not show yellow nape nor white rump. Is much more numerous in the park than Golden-fronted.

Male with red top. Generally a pale bird with yellow on the lower belly. The tail feathers are streaked, compared to Golden-fronted which has them unstreaked black. These two species overlap in this part of Mexico (Jalisco) and do hybridize. The most common woodpecker in the park. Notice how little yellow it has on the nape compared to the hybrid on 2310.
