2015-11-22    Arroyo Las Pilas (jal), Mexico

Adult from a pair. Both birds present. One of the most common big owls in Mexico, and still, it is the first time I actually see it - have heard it many times. The streaked belly and breast in combination with lacking ear-tufts separates it from the other large forest owls.

2019-06-07    Rancho Primavera (El Tuito - jal), Mexico

Adult bird hooting in the early morning. A medium large owl with a rather small head compared to the body. No ear-tufts, dark eyes, brown mottled upper chest combined with the streaked breast on whitish background is characteristic for this species.

Both a pale and dark morph exist but the species is probably very variable, compare for example with 1966. One of the most common owls in Mexico.
