Colima Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium palmarum palmarum) Colimaspurveugle ~ Tecolote Colimense 2019-05-27 La Cumbre, Colima (Col), Mexico The local endemic counterpart to the Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl. The head looks smaller and grayer on Colima giving more contrast to the bird as it also has a broad rufous breast marking, vest-like. The tail is no exactly short on this bird, mentioning this because the tail of the Ferruginous is always referred to as long, and that this is characteristic for that species. But that tail is always rufous where the tail on this bird is more grayish brown with broad white and gray irregular bands. Another difference the two between is the spotted head of the Colima, where Ferruginous has streaked head. The latter also has larger spots on the back. All in all making them rather distinct from each other. A Black-capped Gnatcatcher, 3032, came in to harass it for a while, actually hitting it repeatedly on the head, before taking off again.
