Western Gull (Larus occidentalis wymani) Amerikansk Svartbag ~ Gaviota Occidental ~ Västtrut 2010-11-02 Topolobampo (sin), Mexico Adult. Only registered two birds of this species this day, so this one should be the same as either 2069 or 2070, but it looks different to me... |

Western Gull (Larus occidentalis wymani) Amerikansk Svartbag ~ Gaviota Occidental ~ Västtrut 2010-11-04 Puerto Peñasco (son), Mexico 1cy - 1 cycle bird. Dark individual. West American Herring Gulls are normally paler and less heavily build. Here with California Gulls of different ages. |

Western Gull (Larus occidentalis wymani) Amerikansk Svartbag ~ Gaviota Occidental ~ Västtrut 2010-11-04 Puerto Peñasco (son), Mexico 1cy - 1 cycle bird. In a plumage which easily could fit a Herring Gull as well - there is indication of a pale inner hand. But still I decide to go with Western because of the compact structure and the heavy blackis bill. |

Western Gull (Larus occidentalis wymani) Amerikansk Svartbag ~ Gaviota Occidental ~ Västtrut 2010-11-10 Ensenada (bcn), Mexico Adults. Likely a pair. These two are unmistakable in the area since the only other large dark-backed gull - Yellow-footed Gull - has yellow legs and normally shows a more powerful tip to the bill. The choice of subspecies is based on the expectancy that birds in Mexico are of the southern subspecies which are darker on the back than the northern ones. These two look rather dark backed but of course it is difficult to say when there is nothing to compare with, and I can't remember the observation in details. |

Western Gull (Larus occidentalis wymani) Amerikansk Svartbag ~ Gaviota Occidental ~ Västtrut 2010-11-13 El Sauzal (bcn), Mexico 1 cycle. Heavy dark brown bird, where especially the lacking bright wedge on inner primaries makes it distinct from a similar-looking Herring Gull. |

Western Gull (Larus occidentalis wymani) Amerikansk Svartbag ~ Gaviota Occidental ~ Västtrut 2010-11-13 El Sauzal (bcn), Mexico Adult. Completely adult-like plumage. Notice the strong bill color and the clean white head even in basic plumage. Pink-colored legs and large white mirror on P10. Subspecies based on locality. |

Western Gull (Larus occidentalis wymani) Amerikansk Svartbag ~ Gaviota Occidental ~ Västtrut 2010-11-13 El Sauzal (bcn), Mexico Yet another adult in pure plumage. This one with a large white mirror on P10. Likely age-related. |

Western Gull (Larus occidentalis wymani) Amerikansk Svartbag ~ Gaviota Occidental ~ Västtrut 2010-11-13 El Sauzal (bcn), Mexico 1cy - 1 cycle bird. The young birds vary a lot and this one is fairly pale. Structure with strong dark bill as well as dark tertials with broad white tips and secondaries protruding under the greater coverts are good indications of this species. Yellow-footed would normally be more advanced at this time of year toward the first alternate plumage, and the Herring Gull more slender and without the protruding secondaries. On photo 2 with young Glaucous-winged Gull. |

Western Gull (Larus occidentalis wymani) Amerikansk Svartbag ~ Gaviota Occidental ~ Västtrut 2010-11-13 El Sauzal (bcn), Mexico 1cy - 1 cycle bird. Heavy appearance, broad wings, strong bill, hand without pale panel and dark blackish tail are characteristic for this species. |

Western Gull (Larus occidentalis wymani) Amerikansk Svartbag ~ Gaviota Occidental ~ Västtrut 2010-11-13 El Sauzal (bcn), Mexico Likely 2cy - 2 cycle bird with the rather bright bill with blackish tip. It is possible that I mis-judge this bird because of the missing back party, but it seems too heavy for a California Gull and doesn't show the pale primary panel expected if it were a Herring Gull. The eye looks pale, but could be emphasized by the very strong sun light. Can't remember the observation but it's surprising to see that the whole back party of the bird is missing. Doesn't look like it has been swept upward hidden by the wing, and if it should have been attacked by a ferocious killer shark or the like, I would assume traces of blood, unless it happened long ago, and the bird now survives without this part of the body. |

Western Gull (Larus occidentalis wymani?) Amerikansk Svartbag ~ Gaviota Occidental ~ Västtrut 2018-10-14 Península Campos (Manzanillo), Mexico Adult without a few secondaries. Subspecies most likely the southern wymanni. Unmistakable in area when seen like this. Big, rather dark back, yellowish-pink feet, white skirt (edge of secondaries showing underneath the dark coverts) and strong bill indicate this species. Yellow-footed is darker and has a stronger bill and more clean yellow feet. Kelp Gull, which I've seen here once, is much darker on the back, and has more greenish legs. This gull was the absolutely only one I could find in Manzanillo in these days. Not even a single Laughing or Heermann's could I find. Therefore a scoop to find this bird, also being my first of the species in Colima. Rare |
