Western Bonelli's Warbler (Phylloscopus bonelli ) Bjergløvsanger ~ Bergsångare 2025-05-09 Jægersborg Dyrehave, Denmark Male. Ulvedalene. Found by Stefan Andersen today. I was there 1430-1530. 55 kilometers on bike. Very active, singing constantly and moving between trees around a clearing. Conifers, Beech and Oak. Was constantly 15 meters up or more while I was there, but judging from the many photos of the bird, it also came lower down at other times. With some good will it is possible to sense the greenish edges to the remiges which in all points toward this species and not the Eastern counterpart, P. orientalis, which in general is duller and browner in plumage. The songs apparently can be very similar, but the calls are different, and some claim to have heard the call that belong to a Western. All fine with me, and a new DK species. As can be seen in the spectrogram the bird delivered two different trills. The one starting at sec 27 starts out at a higher frequency falling slightly toward the end. The one at sec 35 is more level and delivered at a slower pace. All the songs similar to sec-27 contain 11 or 12 notes in this sample, whereas the types similar to sec-35 only contains 9 tones, all of them. And they seem to be used in turns consequently, why there might be a more elaborate song pattern in play. Also: Great Tit, Common Chaffinch. Rare |
