Common Pochard x Ferruginous Duck (hybrid) (Aythya ferina x nyroca ) Same bird: 140 Taffeland x Hvidøjet And (hybrid) ~ Porrón Europeo x Porrón Pardo (híbrido) ~ Brunand x Vitögd Dykand (hybrid) 2022-11-15 Søerne (København), Denmark
Adult. ♂. Skt Jørgens sø N. One of the more common aythya hybrids. On this bird the head and breast mostly resemble the ferruginous duck apart from the orange iris and a rather broad dark band at the tip of the bill, but not as broad as on the pure pochard. From most angles the peaked top of the head is visible; also a ferruginous trait. The underwing is difficult to judge from these photos but it looks intermediate between the two species as well, with subdued white and palish trail edge. The gray flanks and belly plus the limited white lower rump are traces indicating that the pochard is involved. As does the rather long sloping bill. Ferruginous Duck is a more compact bird than Common Pochard which is also the case with this bird compared to the pure pochards around it. A female type bird apparently was present too, which I couldn't find. Will try another day when there is more light on the birds and they perhaps then will be more active. This bird was resting and hiding its bill in the plumage for almost an hour before it became fully visible. OBS:The photo set loads slowly because of the video. Hybrid |
