Gyrfalcon (Falco rusticolus ) Jagtfalk ~ Halcón Gerifalte ~ Jaktfalk 2022-10-12 Kalvebod Fælled, Denmark
First calendar year. Klydesøreservatet. First spotted as a fly-by at Sydvestpynten by SKR SSN OSø. Found by THe in the reserve. A medium pale bird: Pale brown, pale head and rather pale breast. Showing black and white checkered greater coverts below and more diffusely streak median and smaller coverts might be characteristic of the species. At least, Saker Falcon, the only other falcon to be confused with, does not show this pattern. SAFA also shows dark 'trousers'. And would probably still appear a lighter and more agile bird. This individual seemed big, indicating that it might be a female. The bird was first seen by us, when I found it flying away at some height. Then it was met by a Peregrine and the size difference was noticeable. Just before, we had a young Peregrine hunting right in front of us, and the general appearance of the two birds were very different. The Peregrine being fast and sharply profiled, whereas the Gyrfalcon large and heavy with a slower flight. After being harassed by the peregrine it landed and we lost it. But with patience it came up again and we had some great moments when it decided to make a few skin-hunts right in front of us, also coming very close. Others took much better photos than what I was able to. It's been 34 years since I last saw the species on Amager! There have been others in between, while I was in Mexico, but it is still a good indication of how rare it is in our part of the world. And with the global warming it might even be less attractive to travel this far south to find food. Of course one could also interpret its presence as a youngster with a keen eye for what lies beyond the horizon. A broad-winged and broad-sighted adventurer..! Rare |
