Ortolan Bunting (Emberiza hortulana ) Same bird: 3 Hortulan ~ Escríbano Hortelano ~ Ortolansparv 2021-09-18 Kongelundsområdet, Denmark The beach at Sydvestpynten. Found by other observer this day and is in the moment of writing still present four days after. Also see 3562. Foraging mostly on the ground in patches of Lyme Grass, but at times also in washed-up seaweed. Very confident after the first day, allowing people to approach to a few meters. The bird is being aged as 1cy bird by many of the observers, though most of them without any argumentation whatsoever. I can't decide whether it is an older bird or a first year bird. In favor of a first year bird is the very pale eye-ring and perhaps the streaking on the breast and flanks. In favor of a 2cy+ is the overall fresh plumage, where I would have expected a 1cy to at least show some duller and browner wing coverts. Also the very blunt tipped central tail feather seen in some of the photos would fit an adult better. I've tried to dig up detailed information about the molt of the species, but haven't found anything concluding in relation to these photos. Ottenby Bird Station, however, has a photo guide for ringers, but unfortunately this species has not been added yet. Still I tried to use the very similar Yellowhammer, and there found that a 1cy can indeed molt the central tail feathers in post-juvenile molt, thus, giving further support for this bird likely being a first year. A rare visitor nowadays. Rare |
