Adults. Males and females are almost alike, but the males have paler heads. There were 5 birds foraging on their way toward the north. At least two birds are different in the photos, judging by the tails. All photos show pale-headed birds why I lean toward males only, but my experience with the species is very limited, thus only suggesting. The rufous wing patch, visible in photo 10, is good for the species, but here in Mexico it might give associations toward Plumbeous Kite, even though this one normally shows a much larger and stronger colored field in most of the hand. Otherwise rather unique with its cold gray and black colors, the young birds, in some angles, could be confused with a young Peregrine Falcon because of the pointed wings. White-tailed Kite does look rather similar to MIKI, but it always appears more white, and also hunts by hoovering rather and actively catching it prey in the air. |
