Unique in the this part of the Mexico with the buffy brown colors. Bare-throated Tiger-Heron is the most similar species, but is not to be expected away from the coast. A scarce but widespread winter visitor in the country. Has been registered in all states. |

Adult. In this area, unmistakable. Adult Bare-throated Tiger-Heron has gray blue cheek and black cap as well as horizontal streaks down the neck, back and coverts. Likewise the young bird, though the streaks start from the top of the head and shows a more tiger-like pattern. Incidentally I was standing still at this spot for about 15 minutes, and then suddenly the bird came out of the vegetation. 5-10 meters from me. There it moved slowly around a few meters, before it decided to dive into the vegetation, again out of sight. Making you wonder how many birds you miss on a general basis birdwatching, if this big bird can hide so easily right next to you... |
