Adult. Unmistakable when seen well. In this area it is only Happy Wren that looks alike, but it is bigger, and has a warmer and paler colored breast and a much longer tail. The species is a notorious skulker, and this bird only came out when I started to back play it's own call. |

Subspecies: festiva The small wren of high mountain forests. Superficially looking like a Happy Wren, and also to a point sounding like it, at least in this part of Mexico. The short tail and the gray breast are distinct, though, and the bill more pointed, all good field marks, if you are lucky enough to actually get a view of this little skulker. This bird was not skulking though. It came out spontaneously as if we had approached too close to a nest. |
