2cy male. Broad wings and little contrast between head and throat separates it from Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris). The male has a longer tail projection than the female. The red on the throat is fruit color.

2cy male. Beginning dark throat marking indicate 2cy male. The species: The outer primaries are very broad which is an indication of Black-chinned in favor of Ruby-throated. Also the fact that the primaries fall clearly shorter than the tailtip but not too much is a good indication of male Black-chinned.

Subspecies: [monotypic]
Female type. The green hummers are always a challenge, but this one shows the broad outer primaries good for the species compared to Ruby-throated Hummingbird.

The lack of any rufous coloration on this bird is a good indication of an Archilochus hummingbird, and the length of the wing falling just short of the tail tip plus apparently wide out hand indicate the species and that it very likely is a female. The brownish outer remiges in contrast to the darker inner primaries indicate that it is a young bird from last year.
