Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris)    Hummingbirds (Trochilidae)
Rubinstrube ~ Colibrí Garganta Rubí ~ Rubinkolibri
Ruby-throated Hummingbird 2378    (1 photos)
2009-04-30    Playa del Carmen (roo), Mexico

Adult male. Clear ruby gorget and strongly clefted tail. Rather late bird.

Ruby-throated Hummingbird 2373    (3 photos)
2013-10-22    Bosque Los Colomos (Guadalajara), Mexico

Adult male. Short black bill, complete gorget without hint of two colors (Black-chinned), brighter area below the throat, generally no reddish-orange colors, wings shorter than tip of tail, deep tail cleft and compact structure. In the area, wintering, Black-chinned is much commoner, and since the two look very much alike, especially female-types, it takes experience and good observation condition to determine a Ruby-throated with certainty.

2013-10-22    Bosque Los Colomos (Guadalajara), Mexico

Female. Compact, strong green color on the back, wings falling shorter than tail tip and wing narrowing at the end, no orange in the tail plus black short bill indicate this species.

Ruby-throated Hummingbird 2376    (2 photos)
2013-10-22    Bosque Los Colomos (Guadalajara), Mexico

Female. Likely an adult based on the uniformly colored back. Concluded in the field that it was this species, and not a Black-chinned. However, when I see the photos now, I'm not so sure anymore. Overall the strongly colored green back and the short black bill fit Ruby well, but there is something about the elongated profile and the fact that the wing tip looks blunt that makes me doubt this decision. But since photos cheat I decide to stay with my onsite gut feeling until proved otherwise. It looks like 2375 and 2376 actually have been taken in the same tree, making it very likely that all the photos are of the same bird. But since I can't remember for sure, I leave them separate.
