2016-04-19 Las Joyas (Manantlán - jal), Mexico Subspecies: ridgwayi Adult. The grayish basic color and the broad buff neck band indicate this species. Mexican Whip-poor-will also has a buff neck band but it is narrower and the bird in general is darker. |

2019-05-27 Volcán Nevado de Colima, Mexico Subspecies: ridgwayi A nightjar with the characteristic buff collar. Mexican Whip-poor-will is also a dark nightjar and can show a hint of a buff collar too, but never as strong as seen here. The black diamond spots on the scapulars are apparently thinner than on the whip-poor-will, but in general the plumage is very similar. This bird was also responding to playback, why it came out to pose. |
