2022-11-20 Christianshavns vold og voldgrav, Denmark Adult. Ravelinen. A lone bird that stood out by the absence of a white flank line, size and colorful bill. Coot genes: -The coot part of the bird is found in the size which was considerably larger than also present pure moorhens. -The uniformly dark plumage with no traces of white lines or borders. The normal white tips to the secondaries are gone too, therefore being a trait of the moorhen. -The bill shape is coot-like and also the very pointed angle between the bill and the frontal shield is what you normally see on a coot. Moorhen genes: - Bill color. Not as well-marked as on a pure moorhen but the red and yellow colors are distinctive. - The brownish back is what you typically see on a pure moorhen and never on a coot (I think). - The small frontal shield is better sized and shaped for a moorhen than a coot. - The overall green feet and legs are too strongly colored for a pure coot and without the lobbed toes that are common for the coot. Apparently both species can show a hint of red at the base of the tibia, as can also be seen on this bird. I haven't been able to find many records of this hybrid online. A German and a few Dutch birds are presented via THIS flickr thread. Knowing how common it is to find these two species together in countless localities, it is strange that hybrids are not more common if they are able to interbreed. Rare, Hybrid |

2022-11-23 Christianshavns vold og voldgrav, Denmark Adult. Ravelinen. The bird was still present today, showing the same clear features indicating a hybrid. Today I was able to compare it with a coot, and it looked intermediate in size between the coot and the pure moorhens. The overall behavior was more like that of the also present moorhens, sticking to the edge of the water, foraging in between stones and in grassy parts. It acted confident and there were never signs of conflicts with other birds, as can often be seen when someone looks different. OBS: The photo set loads slowly because of the videos. Rare, Hybrid |

2022-12-16 Christianshavns vold og voldgrav, Denmark Adult. Ravelinen. Disappeared for some days, but came back, probably because the new spot it had found closed up by the frost. This, after a little week with frost and some snow in Copenhagen. Unusual on this side of New Year. It was diving eagerly for water plants, and I heard it calling today, with a coot like call, though, with a more raspy deep tone to it. Rare, Hybrid |

2022-12-18 Christianshavns vold og voldgrav, Denmark Adult. Ravelinen. As my friend Ove Raagaard commented, the parents are probably male coot and female moorhen, speculating that a male moorhen would have problems mounting a female coot... Rare, Hybrid |

2023-02-03 Christianshavns vold og voldgrav, Denmark Adult. Sensitive being. All of the birds this day. A good number of ducks, pigeons and gulls were roosting peacefully along the water when I arrived, and I saw fore me, how I would get photos of a good number of banded gulls. But then, before getting the camera ready, all the birds took flight simultaneously, Screaming as if a life-threating danger had emerged. I looked around, but couldn't see anything. No raptors and no persons or dogs approaching. Maybe it was just a hysterical whim they responded to, after all. But then when I got clear along the path and could overlook the water, there was this very red balloon floating on the water and coming down this way. All the birds were gone, except for the hybrid, and when the balloon got closer it was obvious that the bird did not like it. Either I would say, because it was probably what caused the alarm before. It started to swim faster away from the balloon toward the other bank. But as the balloon continued in the same direction the bird for a moment seemed in panic, but then eventually started to swim in the other direction, toward me, and away from the balloon that got caught by the reeds on the far bank, and ended its journey there I presume. And the hybrid calmed down, having avoided the eminent red danger. Unfortunately the gulls didn't return before I decided to continue. |
