West Mexican Chachalaca 1195    (2 photos)

Only chachalaca in the area. Rufous-bellied, north of Puerto Vallarta, has the belly and vent very rufous. The two species interbreed in the overlap zone. The rather strong color on the rear flank could indicate that this bird has some Rufous-bellied genes in it. It would be interesting to learn how much the pure birds can deviate from the traditional description of the two species. Also see 1197.

Becerrera.
Here the red color around the eye is greatly reduced, and the color on the rear flank only buffy and weak. This could indicate a bird with mixed characters from both Rufous-bellied and West Mexican Chachalacas. WM is supposed to have a strong red pink orbital around eye but a weakly colored rear belly, and Rb should be grayish around the eye and strongly colored belly. Compare with 1195.

Cinnamon colored rear flank and tail corners are typical for this species compared to Rufous-bellied. In the overlap zone north of Colima a wide variety between the two can be found.

A nesting bird right above the entrance to the cave. A good indication that people come here only rarely.
