Roseate Tern (Sterna dougallii)    Gulls, Terns and Skimmers (Laridae)
Rosenterne    Charrán Rosado
Roseate Tern 308    (1 photos)
2009-04-27   Isla de Cozumel, Quintana Roo (Roo), Mexico

Subspecies: dougallii
Adult in alternate plumage. The dark right upper wing showing a very marked wedge is probably exaggerated caused by the angle in the strong sun light. The under wing more correctly shows the dark marking limited to the outer remiges. The black very slim hood and the long black bill are good field marks.

2009-04-27   Isla de Cozumel, Quintana Roo (Roo), Mexico

Subspecies: dougallii
Adults and 2cy bird. The 2cy bird with the dark legs shows a rather dark leading edge to the wing, like young Common Tern (Sterna hirundo) The adults in lesser degree. Otherwise the long streamers, the very white appearance, the long black bill and the long red legs separates this species easily from other terns. Here with Brown Noddy (Anous stolidus) and Sandwich Terns (Thalasseus sandvicensis).
