Subspecies specifics of juveniles: American, surinamensis, shows wing-breast spot broader but less well-defined edges, has a diffuse darkish flank and shows little contrast between tail and upper tail coverts and back. And also shows more contrast on dark head markings with the ear patches being darker than the crown. European birds, niger, often shows well-marked pale borders to upper tail coverts and scapulars.

Subspecies: surinamensis Basic plumage. A flock of 180 birds arrived from the ocean? to forage in the lagoon. Don't know how normal it is to see this many birds away from the sea. |

Subspecies: surinamensis Basic plumage. A single bird present. Small and compact, with dark back and wings and dark legs separates it from the only similar species, Common Tern - young bird. But the character unique to the species is the dark patch that continues from the the back down in front of the wing. |
