Adult with continued winter crown. In the area the species is easiest to confuse with Royal Tern. The Elegant Tern is both much rarer and much smaller than Caspian and should not be a problem. Compared to the Royal Tern the Caspian is heavier built and has the gravity point put very much forward toward the head region. It flies with softer wing beats, like a gull, and general does not appear as edgy and pointed as does Royal. The bill color is always blood red compared to the red-orange bill of Royal, and has a diffuse black marking at the tip. The black underwing is characteristic but is not always easy to see. In winter time the Caspian retains almost all of the black crown compared to Royal that always becomes pure white on the front part of the crown. This is a very good field character to separate the two species. in winter. The voice of the Caspian is also very different from the other terns. It sounds more like a hoarse heron. |

Probably 3cy birds. They look adult, but none of them have a complete black cap, which the adult should have at this time of year. It looks like this locality serves as roosting site for many birds of several species that still do not breed. |
