Herring Gull (Larus argentatus)    Gulls, Terns and Skimmers (Laridae)
Sølvmåge    Gaviota Plateada
Herring Gull 2051    (1 photos)
2009-04-29   Las Coloradas, Yucatán (Yuc), Mexico

Subspecies: smithsonianus
2cy - 2 cycle bird. Very worn and bleached with beginning molt of back feathers. The dusky color of the forehead looks unnatural - dirt?

Herring Gull 2052    (3 photos)
2009-04-29   Las Coloradas, Yucatán (Yuc), Mexico

Subspecies: smithsonianus
2cy - 2 cycle bird. This one is also very worn and bleached, which could suggest that it spent the whole winter down here in the strong sunlight. Some back feathers and inner primaries molted.

Herring Gull 2053    (2 photos)
2009-04-29   Las Coloradas, Yucatán (Yuc), Mexico

Subspecies: smithsonianus
2cy - 2 cycle bird. Not as worn and bleached as 2052, but still affected by the strong sunlight I suppose. Also here it looks like the the inner primaries and some back feathers have been changed.

Herring Gull 1455    (2 photos)
2014-11-08   Helsingør, Sjælland, Denmark

Subspecies: argentatus
Adult and 1cy bird. On the adult the limited black hand and especially the p5 without any black spots are good indications of this subspecies, and not argenteus which normally has a more western distribution.

Herring Gull 3327    (3 photos)
2020-01-04   Mazatlán, Sinaloa, Mexico

Subspecies: smithsonianus
1 cycle (2cy). Tentatively calling this a Herring Gull though the resemblance to a California Gull is big. I base this mainly on the great amount of white in the outer tail, which should be unusual for a California. And also on the obvious pale wedge in the hand which you normally don't see on a California either. However, the overall impression of the bird, structure and colors, leans more toward a California if you ask me...

Herring Gull 3344    (3 photos)
2020-04-01   Vinkelhuse (Tårnby), Amager, Denmark

Adult. Female. Trying to repeat the success a Great Black-backed Gull had yesterday extracting a piece of bread from the same plastic bag. But of course it was empty and soon forgotten by the gull; now destined to fly to unknown places by the fresh northwestern wind.

Banded with white text on blue, right leg: V.L2W
Metal band left leg.

Banded as a 3cy female Damhussøen, Copenhagen on 2012-02-07 (Kjeld Tommy Pedersen).

Reported extensively during 2012 and 2013 from Damhussøen, and then not until this observation made from my bedroom window.

2021-09-29   Amager Strandpark, Amager, Denmark

Fourth calendar year. Male. Also see 3496, same bird from last year.

The plumage looking overall adult, but comparing with last years plumage, it is obviously not an adult now, but rather a 4cy bird, also because of the pale bill with extensive black, though much lesser than the year before.

V.KKA, black on yellow, right leg. Metal band on left leg.

2021-09-29   Amager Strandpark, Amager, Denmark

Adult. Non-breeding. Assuming it is a complete adult, and in heavy primary molt, giving it a stump-ended profile.

Herring Gull 3580    (3 photos)
2021-09-29   Amager Strandpark, Amager, Denmark

First calendar year. Looks rather disorganized the plumage, but the photo of the upper wing gives a good indication of a bird with uniform wing coverts and remiges, making it a first year bird.

Herring Gull 3581    (1 photos)
2021-09-29   Amager Strandpark, Amager, Denmark

First calendar year. Typical darkish brown and uniformly looking bird.

Herring Gull 3582    (1 photos)
2021-09-29   Søstjernen, Amager Strand, Amager, Denmark

First calendar year. Hatch year bird showing two generations of scapulars.

There were several gulls around, while it was accommodating this mouthful, but none seemed interested in competing for it. Maybe because it was a big and determined bird, or perhaps the gulls in general are well fed at this spot giving them no need to fight for food.

Herring Gull 3626    (1 photos)
2021-10-25   Søstjernen, Amager Strand, Amager, Denmark

First calendar year. A paler individual with paler bill base and molt of head and breast region. And many second generation scapulars.

Herring Gull 3628    (1 photos)
2021-10-25   Søstjernen, Amager Strand, Amager, Denmark

Second calendar year. Gray back and some scapulars and pale eye are good for this age. The whitish tips to the visible primaries indicate that they are fresh and therefore not from the juvenile cycle.

Herring Gull 3783    (2 photos)
2021-12-06   Amager Strandpark, Amager, Denmark

Third calendar year. With immature tail feathers and many wing coverts, all greater coverts, I think it is reasonable to suggest that this is a bird of this age, and not a retarded 4cy bird. Due to the very dark markings in the head and apparently much black in the hand, I would guess that the bird would be an argenteus rather than an argentatus. But not sure.
