In flight from below the golden brown head area in contrast to the white underside is very characteristic of the species. Also the tail pattern with the dark central feathers and whitish lateral patches at the base is typical.
In transition to alternate plumage with a few black-centered shoulder-feathers.
In photo 1 to the right of a Least Sandpiper. This, being difficult to see the yellow-green legs on, but you still get the mouse-like vibe even from this angle.
