2018-01-05 Parque Nacional Lago Pañuelas (cl), Chile Subspecies: chilensis Adult. This subspecies has more black in the face and a grayer head than the subspecies further north. And the black on the breast is connected to the black on the face in this subspecies. Common species in the area. |

2018-01-05 Parque Nacional Lago Pañuelas (cl), Chile Subspecies: chilensis Adult. In the air the plumage is much more contrasting than on the ground. And here the defensive spikes at the wing bend are very obvious. A feature shown by other vanellus species as well (and jacanas). And as the photos indicate this species is very vocal, not to say noisy, and you hear it constantly when it is present. At least so it seems... |

2018-04-17 Mapastepec savannas (chp), Mexico Subspecies: cayennensis Adult. Pampa Honda. Rare in Mexico, but these two (2577) birds bred here last year, and will probably do it again now that they have arrived again this year. Apparently birds of the northern subspecies with limited black in the face and more cinnamon cast to the head. Compare with southern birds from Chile (2572-75). Rare |
