Pibesvane ~ Cisne de Tundra ~ Mindre Sångsvan | |
Hide text
In Denmark (bewickii): For identification in trickier situations it will be useful to learn the proportions of this species compared to Whooper Swan - the head is very long/large, almost half the length of the neck, whereas it only is a third of the length of the neck on a Whooper.
Both of the 'yellow' swans have short tail meaning that you will never see a tail sticking out like it does on a Mute Swan. This is actually a very reliable feature both when seen swimming and sleeping. |

2019-01-14 Kalvebod Fælled, Denmark Subspecies: bewickii Adult. Hejresøen. Adult with completely white plumage and yellow on the bill. The extension of yellow varies from bird to bird, some are yellow all across the base of the bill whereas this one shows the other extreme, with yellow restricted to the sides of the bill. When seen together with Whooper Swan, picture 9-13, the size difference is obvious and when bills are seen, as is the limited extent of yellow on Tundra. The species has become scarcer during the later years and is particularly rare to find roosting in this part of Denmark, and even less so wintering as is the case with this single bird. |

2021-10-31 Kalvebod Fælled, Denmark Subspecies: bewickii Adult. Nisø. Size can be difficult to judge except here with the mallards in the foreground. Otherwise it will be useful to learn the proportions of this species compared to Whooper Swan - the head is very long/large, almost half the length of the neck, whereas it only is a third of the length of the neck on a Whooper. Nice with roosting birds of this scarce species. |

2021-10-31 Kalvebod Fælled, Denmark Subspecies: bewickii Adult. Villahøj. A few days ago there were 9, then perhaps 10 and now 11. I would have liked two of these birds to be, also present, Mute Swans, but as the suspected candidates eventually showed their heads, they all were Tundras. With two birds also present today at Nisø (3636), it's obvious that now is the time they come through, and as they normally do, in smaller numbers, adding one here, adding two there, and so 13 nice birds present today of this fine species. Also: Herring Gull, Northern Lapwing, Mallard, Green-winged Teal, Humans. |
