2017-10-22 Bosque Los Colomos (Guadalajara), Mexico Subspecies: monsoni Adult male. The subspecies only based on the locality. This bird is sick. It's got what looks like a tumor on the side of the neck. It was obvious that something was wrong with it also before I got my binoculars on it. It was almost crawling over the grass and it was foraging in the sun, which they never do if they can avoid it. This it probably did to be warmed up after a chilly night. I stayed at the same position to watch it while it slowly moved forward along the sunny patch leading down toward me. First when it was half a meter from me, it looked up and found out that there could be danger in the air. But even then it only flew about 5 meters before it dropped down and started to forage again. A sad birthday experience for me, who had gone to the park to try to see if I could beat my record of 67 species in a day set on one of my previous birthdays. Aberrant |
