They move about during the day foraging in landscapes and often near cattle ranches. At night most of them return to the cities where they seek shelter in urban trees - a warmer and safer solution. Overlooking the arid land that in the reflective absence makes me feel a great longing back... |

Adult males preparing for landing. Fascinating: When looking at the wings of the bird most to the left the attachment seems very fragile. Best photos |

Adult males with Brown-headed Cowbirds. Interesting why you almost never see any females here in Ags. The species is not as numerous as the cowbird in Ags. The largest gathering I have seen was 15000 back in the winter 05-06 which was extraordinary cold. The flock in the photo was a part of a larger group of about 7000 birds. |

Adult males - most of them. You see a few Brown-headed Cowbirds and to the extreme right what looks like a female Yellow-headed Blackbird. But it looks rather small? Do hybrids between the blackbird and cowbirds occur? |

Spectacular show! Some estimated 100000 birds during less than half an hour heading for their night roost somewhere toward southwest! Starting with scattered smaller flocks with 1-200 birds the action soon escalated with birds passing by in their thousands - several times long waving bands of birds extended for more than a kilometer toward both sides of the lake. The species is known for these large congregations during winter, but every time I experience it, it still excites me. To stand 20 meters below a moving carpet of thousands of birds while being hit by the sound wave created by their rapid wing movements, is just incredible. |
