Basic and alternate plumage look different but are based on the same feathers (body feathers only molt once a year, pre-basic); in the summer the feather edges have been worn off revealing the sharper looking plumage. |

2022-01-19 Kalvebod Fælled, Denmark Adult. ♂. Winter plumage. A single bird being grounded by the strong wind outside the southern tower. I had a larger flock, 30, in the weekend, being the only birds so far this winter. |

2023-10-26 Amager Strandpark, Denmark First calendar year. ♂. A single bird was foraging near Bunker 3. Male because of the black primaries and much white along the wing. And I think it is a young bird because of the very warm brown colors, but then again, the third tertial has white edges, which I would guess is better for an adult bird. Not sure... |
