Young bird. Poor photo, but include it as a reference. Several birds migrated south from Sweden this day because of cold weather.

Subadult, almost adult plumage. Still dusky tint to the tip of the tail and a strange black patch at the base of the tail, which might have to do with the bird being banded as well. Apparently a pair is present at the lake, but breeding has not been confirmed.

Adult. Low over Hejresøen toward Kongelunden. Likely local bird.

Adult. Calling it an adult because of the all yellow bill and the all white tail. But to my best judgment this is not one of the two birds breeding this year. The head and neck feathering is too dark compared to the other birds. See 3543.

However, it was sitting in the patio-tree that the breeding pair often favors, close to the nest, making me wonder if this one has acted as an intruder with selfish intentions. There are quite a few eagles in the larger area, several birds on Saltholm, the nearby island in Øresund, and this spring four birds have been seen at the same time on Aflandshage at the southern point of Amager.

But whatever it was doing there, it apparently was a one time event because I've only seen it this once.

Adult. The pair in the patio-tree. Comparing the two to the one in 3542 from the day before, it is obvious that the latter is another bird.

Adult. At last I managed to see a bird in the nest, which was a big step forward from speculating whether it was active or used at all this year. Of course, having seen the pair in the area on several occasions during the spring, this was a good indication that they were doing more that just hanging around.

Juvenile. Welcome to the world! The big surprise this year! Almost everybody had reached the conclusion that this year would produce no offspring in KL. This, because of the way the adults have behaved, apparently being away from the nest in longer time, and both at the same time. I saw this once, in bad weather, and reached my own similar conclusion based on that.

Juvenile. Since my last observation of the bird, on 2021-06-08, I had been contacted by DOF to confirm that a juvenile was actually present in Kongelunden this year. Nice as I am, I sent a photo and confirmed where the nest was.

When seeing the bird today, with that lump on the back, my instant thought was, that over-eagerly researchers had attacked the nest to put a transmitter on the bird: In the Questionable Name of Science.

It looked strange, though, I admit. No squarish edges and no antenna sticking out, but could disorganized feathers really look like this? I hoped so but thought not. Complaining in advance the rest of the day, I decided to revisit the nest, hoping the bird would show itself again, which certainly had not been the case everyday until now.

Juvenile. Wing coverts not fully developed but still eager to find out more about flying.

As mentioned yesterday, 3546, I was on a mission to find out if the bird had really been wired up or not. And as you can see, it was not. Thankfully. Therefore concluding that young eagle feathers can look really messy!

UPDATE 2021-07-28: Spoke to Thomas Hellesen today and to my sad surprise he told me that DOF indeed had sent a man up in the nest to band the bird and to put on a gps-transmitter, to what I can only disapprove and say that you can be sure that I from now on will keep my mouth shut and lie if necessary if I'm asked anything that smells like Scientific Ego is being nurtured rather than the well-being of our fellow beings.

Juvenile. Male. Still in the nest, but looks strong and ready to fly.

According to TH it is a male.

Adult. Probably one of the local birds from Kongelunden, though the other bird present today was an immature. They stayed apart.

Immature.
Bad photo, but just to record a young bird present in the area, or perhaps migrating through toward the South.

Immature. Sat along Reservatvej. Probably the same immature that is being seen continuously in the area.

It looks like it is banded, but might be an artefact.
