American birds, egretta, show black culmen to bill in breeding plumage compared to European, alba, birds where most of the bill becomes black. Both show green cere during courtship period. Egretta shows mostly black legs, stronger colored during breeding, whereas alba shows a paler tibia generally and possibly turns pink during courtship.
