Bright bird. The underside is here exaggerated bright because of overexposure, but generally it white on the underside, with dark remiges and a narrow dark front edge to the underwing. The undertail is dusky to a varying degree, which the species shares with Pink-footed and Black-vented Shearwaters. Latter, however, pertains to the small shearwaters, and would appear more compact in flight than here. The long tail is diagnostic for Wedge-tailed.
Bright bird. The species looks a lot like Pink-footed, but has a smaller head, and slimmer neck, and is generally more cooly brown on the upperside, has a broader wing base, often a more slender and greenish gray bill with less contrast to the dark bill tip. The dark neck sides are more gray and sharper defined than on Pf. The long tail, when fully grown, is also diagnostic.
Dark bird. Resembles a Sooty Shearwater, but the broad wings and the long tail are pretty clear here. The underwing shows a diffuse whitish cast to the coverts, but not marked enough for a Sooty. The bill is probably also too strong for a Sooty. And further more, Sooty is not common in these waters.
The angled wing probably assures that the size is correctly assessed, otherwise the bird appears rather small and slender, like one of the small shearwaters.
