Subspecies: psammochrous All guide books mentions that the tail is square-tipped on this species, but apparently not always. The tail should be fully grown by this time of year, so the cleft should not be caused by growning central feathers. Alternatively it could be another species, but the only realistic alternative is Bank Swallow, which has slimmer proportions and would show more contrast between the head and the throat. |

Subspecies: ??? Subspecies probably serripennis or psammochrous. Here it is clearly seen that they do not belong to any of the races with dark tips to undertail coverts. |

Subspecies: ??? Subspecies probably either psammochrous or serripennis depending wether it is a central Mexican bird or a bird breeding farther north. Serripennis is darker than psammachrous, and this bird being rather dark, it could an indication of a northbound bird. |

Subspecies: psammochrous Completely different appearance than 1256 when the light does not penetrate from above. The dark square cut tail in contrast to white under tail coverts is characteristic for the species (except subspecies ridgewayi from Yucatan). |

Subspecies: ridgwayi/stuarti Not the same bird in all photos! Obviously more robust and darker than the common northern form seen in Mexico outside of Yucatán. A more distinctive character though is the dark tips to the undertail coverts, which, however, is only visible in photo 8 of this mediocre sample. Only swallow I saw in the area. |
