The short bill, the bright throat and the white tail-edges are all good characteristics for this species. Scarce migrant and winter guest in the city parks. Believe it to be more common in the more fertile and green south-west corner of the state, near Calvillo. White tail-edges is a clue. |

Adult molting. On these photos you can only see a part of the white tail edge characteristic for the species, but live it was pretty obvious. Notice how it shows a similar white 'mouth' as does the Cassin's, though it is not as marked as it is seen on that species. Also notice the pale tips to the tail which could indicate Cassin's too, but the paleness is not strong enough for that species. Short bill is also a good indication of this species. And lastly, the simple fact that the bird was sitting on my wire is a clear indication of it being something different, because though there are various local Cassin's constantly around the house, I've never seen them perch on the wires. Several Westerns showed up this day, but in the moment of writing, the 10th, they have all gone again, headed south toward their wintering sites further south. Normally you don't see the species in Jalisco in winter, why you have to find them while they migrate through. Coto La Condesa |

Typical bird with small bill and gentle head expression plus the characteristic white outer vane to the outer tail feathers. |
