2012-10-22 Las Trojes (Jocotepec - jal), Mexico Male. Bad picture, but included as id learning. More pics of the same bird come later. The most important to notice on this bird is that it is small and does not have any rufous in the tail or on the rump. |

2013-01-06 Volcán Nevado de Colima, Mexico Female type. Small and compact with limited orange in the tail and the side of the breast. Tail and wingtips are of equal length. Females are very like the females of Calliope, but has a longer tail and bill, and normally more orange at the outer tail base, as seen here. And since the tail seems to be slightly longer than the wing tip, I think it is a Broad-tailed. Also Calliope normally shows black distally on the central tail which does not seem to be the case here, where uniformly greenish fits Broad-tailed much better. |

2019-11-26 Camino Coajomulco-San Juan Tlacotenco (mor), Mexico Adult male. Broader gorget than what the two archilochus (RTHU/BCHU) species would show, and complete lack of any of the rufous tones the other two Selasphorus (RUHU/ALHU) would show. The short wings compared to the tail is good too. |
