2017-04-20 Parque Natural El Triunfo (chp), Mexico Subspecies: cyanocephala (Azure-crowned) Likely a young bird with the rufous-chestnut colored fore-crown and no hints of blue anywhere around the head. The lower mandible of the young bird is probably less red, but difficult to confirm here. Seen close to the pickup site where Jorge was so grateful to be on his way back to the civilization that he kissed all the horses on the muzzle - twice. |

2017-04-26 El Ocote (chp), Mexico Subspecies: cyanocephala (Azure-crowned) Adult. Adult type with blue fore-crown and red lower mandible. The blue crown combined with the white breast is unique in the area. Violet-crowned is allopatric but also always shows a complete white breast and the crown color is indeed violet rather than blue. Distribution of White-bellied Hummingbird overlap but it has a more anonymously green crown combined with a entirely white breast and a more compact structure, appreciable in the field. |
