2014-02-05 Valle de las Garzas (Manzanillo), Mexico A larger flock of dowitchers down on the coast will always make me say short-billed to start with, but since the two species in basic plumage apparently can overlap completely, I decide to leave them as sp., unless the field marks are completely clear. The birds standing, to me, all look like short-billed, weak breast contrast and on the right bird not so lumped back, but the bird landing has very strong contrast between the throat and the breast and appears to have well-defined flank bars, which indicate a long-billed. However, the bright tail is more in favor of a short-billed. Also two Least Sandpipers in the foreground. |

2014-02-05 Valle de las Garzas (Manzanillo), Mexico Basic plumage. Not much to help id this bird, but my cut feeling says that it is a Short-billed, as it does with most of the dowitchers seen this day. |

2014-02-05 Valle de las Garzas (Manzanillo), Mexico The strong contrast between belly and breast and apparent flank bars could suggest a Long-billed. However, the bird looks like a first winter with very worn greater wing coverts, and young birds of both species are supposed to be more irregular in their plumage aspects, why I'll tend to ignore that in this situation. Structurally, however, the bird seems to fit well with a Short-billed based on the flat back with top point close to the head region. Believe most in Short-billed. |

2014-02-22 Valle de las Garzas (Manzanillo), Mexico Basic plumage. Rather sure that most, if not all, of the these birds are Short-billed: Low breast contrast and the few birds leaning forward to forage show the slender body shape typical of this species. Also a Lesser Yellowlegs and a Least Sandpiper. |

2014-02-22 Valle de las Garzas (Manzanillo), Mexico There are for and against saying that this bird is a Short-billed, but my gut feeling tells me that it is. The darker breast well-defined toward the brighter belly, and the darker flanks indicate a Long-billed. However, the breast doesn't appear very dark, and the general shape of the bird fits a Short-billed better, without tendency to ball shape and hunched back. |

2014-02-22 Valle de las Garzas (Manzanillo), Mexico Basic plumage. The very broad black bands on the tail scream Long-billed, but if it is enough to make a positive id, when it also shows a rather short bill, I'm not sure. Also with little contrast on the underside. |

2014-02-22 Valle de las Garzas (Manzanillo), Mexico Basic plumage. Shot taken just after 1923, but looks like another bird. Here the tail looks more bi-colored, so tending more toward Short-billed. |

2014-02-22 Valle de las Garzas (Manzanillo), Mexico Basic plumage. The foraging in the front to the right, looks like it has the top point of the back in the middle, indicating that the bird could be a Long-billed. About the rest I will only say that they apparently look like Short-billed. |

2014-02-22 Valle de las Garzas (Manzanillo), Mexico Basic plumage. Difficult to saying anything with certainty. They look rather ball-shaped, however, but this could be caused by the angle, or in the case of the left bird, that it is preening. |

2014-02-22 Valle de las Garzas (Manzanillo), Mexico Basic plumage. Looks most like a Short-billed, but the tail looks rather dark and abstracting from the strong light the contrast between dark breast and bright belly could look rather strong. |

2014-02-22 Valle de las Garzas (Manzanillo), Mexico Basic plumage. The body shape of the two outer birds is rather round, a la Long-billed, and the bird in the middle rather slim and flat backed, a la Short-billed. Also Least Sandpiper. |

2014-02-22 Valle de las Garzas (Manzanillo), Mexico Basic plumage. Looks very round-backed and the tail looks dark, which points toward Long-billed, but I think the body looks rather slim for being this species, so I spuh it. |
