2008-01-19 Dragør Havn, Denmark
First calendar year. First winter bird in complete juvenile plumage. Classic long slender bill, whitish head contrasting with overall brownish body, well-marked tail band, white-tipped tertials and uniformily colored greater coverts. A lone bird in the harbor. In general only few gulls roost here. Probably because of the almost non-existing fishing activity. The citizens of Dragør are no longer rooted in the old traditions of the area. Being modern metropolitans commuting forth and back doing service jobs in the larger Copenhagen area. |

First calendar year. Especially the second generation scapulars with the long fine center line is a good indication of the species. |

First calendar year. A few 2.gen scapulars are showing on this rather messy looking bird - at least as it stands in photo 1. The broad black tail band, not narrowing laterally, contrasting well with the base of the tail and the coverts. And the greater coverts almost all with dark centers support this species. It also shows a rather dark inner hand only with pale inner webs and a rather pale underwing. Plus the almost clean white underside. To notice: Looking at the flanks in photo 4 and 5 it certainly looks like they're different. But I've scrutinized all my photos and there is not doubt that the two are of the same bird, although from different sequences, why angle, blurriness and feather movements must account for the difference. |

First calendar year. The long bill and whitish head and belly stood out when I saw the bird at first, pointing me in direction of this species. The long legs and the apparently completely molted mantle, to 2. gen feathers, and what looks like an almost clean white tail with a solid black subterminal band support the id. Banded with black text on yellow on right leg: VLET. Metal band on left leg. Banded |

Adult. Banded with black text on yellow on right leg: V.LET. Metal band on left leg. It's a Danish band, used by Kjeld Tommy Pedersen, but it looks like he's not responding anymore, so don't have more information. This bird shows many good characters for cachinnans: White head, long slender bill, 2. gen scapulars extensive, dark centers of outer coverts, tail pattern, pale underwing... Banded |
