Subspecies: parvus/americanus
The general cinnamon plumage color, especially the underwing, which here is emphazised by the evening light, distinguishes this species from the other curlews. Marbled Godwit (Limosa fedoa) has a similar plumage, but is distinguished by a straight up-bent bill.

2016-06-30    Presa la Vega (jal), Mexico

Subspecies: ?
Likely adult female. Female because of the long bill, and adult because it is less likely that juvenile birds should have arrived at Mexico yet, but it also looks like an ongoing molt on the neck. Perhaps a bird that stayed in Mexico for the summer?

2018-10-14    Península Campos (Manzanillo), Mexico

Subspecies: ?
Adult, by the pattern on the wing coverts, and think it might be a male with medium long bill. The female normally has a very long bill, but overlap occurs and it can be difficult to judge correctly even from this many photos. Notice the shorter lower mandible and the thickened tip to the upper mandible, which should be unique to the North American Curlews. In these photos you see clearly how the species is separated from Whimbrel which is smaller and has a much grayer plumage plus the heavily barred underwing. Long-billed is a very golden orange bird with a longer bill normally. Sometimes it looks like it has an eyestripe as strongly marked as the Whimbrel, but it never shows the white middle stripe on top of the head. In all it normally reminds more of the Marbled Godwit which was also present this day. But that one is always smaller which can be appreciated easily in these photos, but not always in the field.
