Black-winged Stilt (Himantopus himantopus)    Stilts and Avocets (Recurvirostridae)

Adults. Unmistakable. The two birds probably came from Scania, southern Sweden, where two have been present lately, but gone today! Later today others witnessed that the birds were mating and started nest building. Interesting indeed, but the odds of success are low with disturbances, predators and fluctuating water level to be aware of.

Update: A few days later the birds flew to Villahøj on Kalvebod Fælled, where they are still present busy breeding!

Subspecies: [monotypic]
The family flock with 3 juveniles from Villahøj, Kalvebod Fælled, are starting to move about. Were roosting along Sydmøllevej when they took flight at 1930 toward south east. There I lost them in direction of Sydvestpynten, and thought it plausible that they had stopped on Kofoeds Enge (KE) before heading out over the sea, speculating if they would return south the same way as they arrived in the spring, meaning first a stop at KE followed by a stop along the southern Scania coast, Sweden, before heading south.

As you can see the birds did stop, but only until a few minutes after I spotted them, disturbed by a birder walking on the sea side of the lagoon. Here first the male took flight in direction of Kalvebod Fælled and it was soon followed by the others. This was a 2020.

A qualified guess was that they would return to familiar grounds, which was confirmed the next day when they all were present at Villahøj.

Both adults in wing molt - inner primaries.

Update 2021-08-14:
The birds stayed for a while at villahøj, and then 5 birds were seen at Ølsemagle Revle a few days when they were gone from Amager. There were breeding birds near Næstved also this year, why these birds theoretically could have come from there, but probably were the ones from Amager. Later they returned to Villahøj to finally, as in the moment of writing, to have moved to Scania, Sweden, somewhere near Lund, where they have been for several days. I guess they have finally left Denmark, and will move south when the wing molt is over.

Male and female. The pair is back at Villahøj!

In photo 2 the female is on the left with brownish back.

Last year the birds were staying in Scania, Sweden before the arrived on Amager, on May 8th. The first record in the Swedish record portal says May 2nd, which means the birds arrive almost two weeks earlier this year. Of course they could have arrive to Sweden before they were discovered on the 2nd, but being a very conspicuous bird and May being a month with extra birding activity, I doubt they had been there for many days.

UPDATE: The birds disappeared the same evening, and has not returned (2022-04-20).

Female. Villahøj.

This was bird number three that arrived this year. It stayed for a while. I'm not sure if it tried to compete with the female in the pair.
