2016-02-11 Presa la Vega (jal), Mexico Adult males. The black tail area in combination with the red-orange body and flanks is typical of the species. Eurasian Wigeon and Northern Pintail also show black around the tail, but both of them have more grayish bodies and flanks, though, in different ways. |

2016-02-11 Presa la Vega (jal), Mexico Adult male in alternate plumage. Typical expression. Here the black border to the base of the bill is obvious, something that Eurasian Wigeon never shows. |

2016-02-11 Presa la Vega (jal), Mexico A pair with a female Gadwall in the background. The male doesn't look very marked. Don't know this is because of age, young, or individual variation. |

2016-02-11 Presa la Vega (jal), Mexico A pair in breeding plumage. Typical short gray bill with black tip and border to the base of the bill. The latter is a good character to distinguish it from Eurasian Wigeon. In typical plumage, like here, however, there should be no problem separating the two. The females might still look alike, but American always has a grayish sheen to the head and the upper neck. |

2016-02-11 Presa la Vega (jal), Mexico Adult male in alternate plumage. Rather unique in the area with the gray green head, large white wing patch and black tail party. The white underwing toward the base of the wing separates it from Eurasian Wigeon. |
