Adult male in eclipse plumage beginning transition to breeding plumage. In picture 2 the bird looking out of the frame is another ecliptical male, determined by the pure white wing coverts. The other right side bird could be too or a juvenile.

Two males. The left one still in eclipse, after-breeding-plumage, and the right one already in fresh breeding plumage.
Is this marked plumage difference age-related or just natural variation?
At the lake near the railway.

Male in eclipse plumage to the left. The green sheen to the side of the head is a natural trait of the species, and not an indication of hybridism with American Wigeon.
The right bird is a female type, but I didn't see it better than on the photo, why I'm not sure if it's an adult or juvenile.

Males and females. Some males completely transformed to breeding plumage, others lacking a good deal, but all having pure white wing coverts.
The all-brown females I don't think are ageable here.
