AD. M. The first real frost in more than a year became this poor animal's destiny. Wihtout knowing exactly what happened, it is very likely that it got trapped on the dike when large number of people started to show up during the beautiful morning. Freezing northern wind but with a clear sky and the sun burning on a weekend day, it was inevitable that people wanted to get out to enjoy it. Even more so during the pandemic restrictions. I guess the panic got it and it tried to cross the canal unwillingly.
I got to the spot only after others had been watching it struggling to get out of the cold water for 45 minutes! They had already called the police, but I decided to call the park ranger directly thinking he would be a faster help. He responded and took off instantly. He lives on the other side of Kongelunden a few kilometers away.
It took him the good part of 10 minutes to arrive, but it was too late. 5 minutes earlier the deer had finally surrendered to the cold water, and had closed its eyes for the last time.
Not that it would have helped it much if the ranger had arrived earlier. His perspective on the situation obviously had been completely different from ours standing there on the dike feeling for the animal, hoping that it could be saved.
He had brought his rifle, and even if it hadn't been dead on his arrival he would have shot it. And I understand his reasoning. Without the real equipment to get such a large animal out of the water, it was the only solution. RIP.

Suppose it is this species based on location, tail length, color and shape of head and nose.
Somehow it got trapped in the cellar shaft at my sister's house. Accidentally by its own doing or a careless moment by the cat of the house.
Batman for animals I came to rescue and released it in a nearby green area. Weak it seemed, after being trapped for how long...nobody knows.
A single mouse in millions and destined for a short-lived life anyway, but still: It's a living being. Who are we to judge the worthiness of some life over another...

Not certain of sex without seeing the upper side of the forewing.

I. F. The black rectangle on the side of the thorax is not so strongly marked, but the shape of the vulvar scale is spot on for the present species, in favor of Moustached.

Assuming it is of the present species, very similar to 462, but without a view of the face, it is not certain.

L. Lærkesletten.
Funny to find it here in the open away from any trees at all, except for a group of very young birches growing at the edge of the seasonal lake in the southern part of the area. But apparently the larva prefers young, easy to digest, leaves, and not necessarily from the sycamore.

Lærkesletten.
Finding this peculiar creature, I was sure it was something special, but then turns out to be one of the most common moths in Denmark.
MAF. Male and female connected. He grabs on to her head with his appendages, and she swings the abdomen up to reach his genital area at the lower back of the thorax.
F. The vulvar scale (skedeklappen) apparently is flexible being able to retract and expand changing the size of the visible part. Notice the size difference in photo 3 and 4.
Yellow on the legs and black line down the eye. Not sure if the prominent two white lines on the thorax, and the likewise Y at the back of it, can indicate a female or a young individual.
F. The prominent vulvar scale (skedeklap) below S9 makes it a female.

F. Fresh and typical. As much of it you can see. Perhaps the same as 423.

F. Looks like a piece of both forewings is missing in symmetrical positions making me wonder if it has been attacked by something, taking a bite..?

M. Weakly marked individual, as many have been lately. The Cell spot on the forewing is barely visible and no orange spots at all.
Speculating if the little rain we've had during the summer and now a high pressure which has brought 30 degrees C to Denmark, continuing a week at least, has had any influence on the health of the population on Amager, making them weaker than usual?

F. Extremely worn, showing almost no traces of markings on the underwing. Fair to id it as this, simply because it is the only expected blue in the area.

M. Worn, why the underside is very faded and probably why the body is lacking hairs.
The faded appearance could be why the species-diagnostic black spot in the Cell, underside hindwing, is absent, rather than the animal being of a true variant.

F. Well-marked yellowish wing patches and all dark tips to the antennas indicate a female.
F. The all black legs and the black T-shape on the front of the breast indicate this species.

F. Pinseskoven. Female by the lack of a prominent black streak on the forewing and by the all dark tips to the antennas, the clubs - not orangy as the male has them.
M. Pinseskoven (Birch-forest). With iridescent blue on the upper wing this is a male.
Easily separated from Lesser Purple Emperor (Apatura ilia), also present in the forest, by the limited yellow to the tips of the antennas, and by lack of an eye spot on the front wing.
Pinseskoven. A robust dragonfly with the abdomen flattened out to the sides rather than rounded, like the darters and has the two lateral black lines, that are unique to the species. Also, the two large 'leaf'-shaped structures at the back end of the thorax are apparently always very conspicuous on this species. The leading edge of the forewing is pale. Not sure if it is a young male or a female.

M. Typical male with the diagonal black streak on the front wing. Plus the pale spots distally on the front wing is a good indication of this species. On Horse-tidsel (Cirsium vulgare).
One of the most common butterflies in Pinseskoven.

Rare plant in Denmark. growing only in a few places with limestone based grassy areas. Parasitic on the root of Greater Knapweed (Centaurea scabiosa) [Stor Knopurt].
M. The close proximity of the last two blue markings on the abdomen is diagnostic for the species plus the fact that they are unbroken from one side to the other.
M. Female has more orange on the upper side of the forewing.
The only reliable area in Denmark to find this species.
This animal was foraging along the main dirt road leading through the forest, and not in the open, on the dike, which is where it apparently most often is found. Perhaps the strong wind today forced it to find shelter in between the trees.
Apparently 1. generation stops flying at the end of June, and 2. generation doesn't start to fly until the end of July, which could explain why we only saw this one animal.
