Little Bittern (Ixobrychus minutus [minutus (Little)]) Dværghejre - Avetorillo Común Kalvebod Fælled, Amager, Denmark 2020-06-10 Adult male. Hejresøen. Discovered by John Larsen this morning. Rather actively singing when I was there during the afternoon, but not very cooperative visually. Only seen briefly when flying from one spot to another. This song is the typical male song, indicating that it was very keen on finding a mate. Will be interesting to see if it is still there tomorrow after a whole day without a female response. Biggest rarity in my time on Amager, I think, which was also indicated by the large number of birders present during my stay. Excellent experience. Recordings, also: [1:48] Eurasian Blackbird, Common Chiffchaff, Common Cuckoo, Little Grebe, Eurasian Coot, Greater Whitethroat, Eurasian Reed Warbler. [0:29] Bearded Reedling, Eurasian Coot, Eurasian Reed Warbler. [0:51] Eurasian Coot, Eurasian Reed Warbler, Eurasian Moorhen, Red-necked Grebe. Blyth's Reed Warbler (Acrocephalus dumetorum [monotypic]) Buskrørsanger Kalvebod Fælled, Amager, Denmark 2020-06-07 Along Ellevehøjvej in a stretch with Buckthorn more than willow bushes. Was discovered earlier today where it was more cooperating than when I visited. During 3 hours in the evening the vocalization in this recording was practically all it gave. It's not a very obvious documentation but the slow repeated dy dy dy sequences are typical of the species and would be rare with any of the other acrocephalus warblers. My first on Amager. Also: Eurasian Blackbird, Common Chaffinch, Greater Whitethroat, Tree Pipit, Common Cuckoo, Willow Warbler. Rare |

River Warbler (Locustella fluviatilis [monotypic]) Flodsanger - Buscarla Fluvial Kongelunden, Amager, Denmark 2020-06-07 Unmistakable sound, and very characteristic too visually with the grayish tinted streaked breast and finely streaked throat and broadly banded undertail coverts. A large warbler preferring to sit obscured, but luckily came out here for a short while. Found it myself. Same spot as where it was seen many years ago in a lush clearing on the north side of the forest. A good year for the species in Denmark and expected on Amager too. Photo 4 uncropped. Greenish Warbler (Phylloscopus trochiloides [viridanus]) Lundsanger - Mosquitero Verdoso Kongelunden, Amager, Denmark 2020-06-05 Typical bird, greenish gray look overall, long broad eyebrow and faint single wing bar. Appearance extremely variable depending on light and angle, as photos show. Singing almost constantly as it is normal for newly arrived warblers. Two song types. The typical thin metallic descending twitter with a single starting note, and an up-and-down sequence resembling Great Tit. Another bird was present today in Pinseskoven, Vestamager. Normal time of year and more or less expected today after rain passed through the Copenhagen area during the night. Sound recordings also: [0:13]: Great Tit, Eurasian Blackbird, Common Chaffinch. [6:18]: Eurasian Blackbird, Eurasian Blackcap, Willow Warbler, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Common Chaffinch, Common Redshank. [Recording has been modified by cutting out noisy irrelevant parts. European Pied Flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca [hypoleuca by location]) Broget Fluesnapper - Papamoscas Cerrojillo Kongelunden, Amager, Denmark 2020-05-28 Adult male singing. A rather discrete song that could easily drown among the more dominant species in the forest. This bird was seen in the southeast department by a supposed breeding spot in mixed mature oak forest with dense understory. Very likely same bird in 3418. Call notes around 00:34 to 00:45. Also: Great Tit, Eurasian Blackbird, Common Chiffchaff, Common Chaffinch. |

Corn Crake (Crex crex) monotypic Crake Engsnarre Amager Fælled, Amager, Denmark 2020-05-21 Present since yesterday, discovered in the morning. When I arrived some 10 persons were standing in the middle of the field where the bird was supposed to be. I stayed on the path, 50 meters away, confident that the bird would be easy to hear from there as well. And I was rewarded, because shortly after it started to call closer to me than to the others (did they push it too much..?). I approached the sound along the path, and then just waited until it called again, and to my surprise it was much closer now having reached the edge of the path, and just some 5 meters from me. Very loud. I had the recorder running and as you can hear got a very good recording. While standing there I considered if I should try to get my camera in case the bird should decide to show itself. But in the same moment the bird came out and flew along the path away from me and landed some 40 meters away in the shadow of a group of large poplars. My first on Amager, and perhaps even my first seen - ever. Also: Eurasian Blackbird, Eurasian Blackcap. |

Colima Warbler (Leiothlypis crissalis) monotypic Colimasanger - Chipe de Colima El Terrero, Minatitlán, Colima (Col), Mexico 2018-11-08 Can't say anything about age or sex, but I can say, that this bird is a Lifer! Finally I managed to find this rare winter visitor, and so very appropriate that it happens in Colima, exactly! It was alone foraging low in the bushes in the semi-open understory, a short distance above the km 12 sign. It responded to playback of the call, but didn't seem to take much notice of it, as it continued foraging the next 10 minutes close by before it decided to move on. This was my first visit at the locality, but the fact that the forest consists of first class mature tall small-leaf oaks with a healthy and dense understory, something I don't think I've seen on the other side of the volcanoes in the same degree, makes me suspect the species prefers exactly this type As soon as I saw the bird, I knew it was something special that I hadn't seen before. But it took a while before the right species occurred to me. It is a big warbler, and the dark plumage makes it look bigger. It is very different from it's cousins Virginia's and Nashville, whereas the former always seems brightly gray white, with restricted yellow to the vent and the breast, and the latter generally looks overall yellowish. All field characters are seen in this set of photos, warm yellow undertail and ocher rump, dirty flanks, brownish back, strong eye-ring and liver red crown feathers. Plus the big size and the voice confirmation. The photos have been cropped, but are otherwise untouched, except for a few of them where I've lightened them slightly to have characters stand out better. But take a look at photo 14, which has not been post-processed, but was heavily over-exposed from the beginning. If someone showed me this photo alone, I'm pretty sure I would have called the bird a Virginia's, if anything, and never a Colima. So again again: Don't ever rely on single poor quality photos to make your decisions. Rare |

Gray Flycatcher (Empidonax wrightii) monotypic Grå Empidonax - Papamoscas Bajacolita Volcán Nevado de Colima, Jalisco (Jal), Mexico 2018-09-30 When I saw it in the binoculars, I thought it looked like a Pewee, because it looked so longish and overall gray, something the normal empidonax's from the area don't show. It was strange, however, that a constant empidonax whit call was heard in direct of the bird, and there didn't seem to be other birds around, why I assume that it came from this bird. The proportions fit a Gray Flycatcher well, and I allow myself to believe I can see a well-marked black tip to the bill below, on photo 2, why I in all likewise will allow myself to count my first Gray Flycatcher in Jalisco! |

Cinnamon-bellied Flowerpiercer (Diglossa baritula baritula) Brunbuget Blomsterborer - Picochueco Vientre Canela Cerro arriba de Cd. Guzmán, Jalisco (Jal), Mexico 2018-08-19 Adult male. Unmistakable when seen well, with the combination of color and the hooked bill tip. It's a species I've had difficulties with. It was therefore a big surprise to find it here, in my local hills. It is known from the volcanoes, but I've never had much success with it there either. This bird sang, as you can hear, and chased another bird, which most likely was a female. The song reminds me of The European Serin - to have a memorable reference at hand. |
