Little Bittern (Ixobrychus minutus)
Little Bittern (Ixobrychus minutus [minutus (Little)])
Herons, Egrets and Bitterns (Ardeidae)
Kalvebod Fælled, Amager, Denmark
Adult male. Hejresøen. Discovered by John Larsen this morning.
Rather actively singing when I was there during the afternoon, but not very cooperative visually. Only seen briefly when flying from one spot to another.
This song is the typical male song, indicating that it was very keen on finding a mate. My theory that newly arrived birds do that. Will be interesting to see if it is still there tomorrow after a whole day without a female response.
Biggest rarity in my time on Amager, I think, which was also indicated by the large number of birders present during my stay.
