Unique in the this part of the Mexico with the buffy brown colors. Bare-throated Tiger-Heron is the most similar species, but is not to be expected away from the coast. A scarce but widespread winter visitor in the country. Has been registered in all states.

Adult. In this area, unmistakable. Adult Bare-throated Tiger-Heron has gray blue cheek and black cap as well as horizontal streaks down the neck, back and coverts. Likewise the young bird, though the streaks start from the top of the head and shows a more tiger-like pattern. This bird didn't pop out of the vegetation until some 15 minutes after I came. 5-10 meters from me. It stayed on the spot moving around a few meters before it decided to dive into the vegetation, out of sight again.
