Adult female. Breeding on the nearby ocean rock Peña Blanca only two kilometers from the coast - in their thousands. This bird though, probably will never breed again since it had an injured wing and couldn't take off.
Breeding pair. The male of the subspecies is very different from the traditional birds with its frosty white head and neck and the blue party around the eye and base of bill.
Young bird. The rather well-marked breast demarcation with scattered brown spots on the belly make me think it is a bird in its third calendar year rather than the second.
Juvenile. Fresh and tight plumage. Even at this age the hint of the breast line is visible. The juvenile Red-footed Booby can appear similar, but normally has a more orangy pale tone to the brownish plumage, but is also very rare in this part of Mexico.
Adult male? The bird landing. The plumage looks like it belongs to an adult, and the bluish gray bill looks like it belongs to a male, but why isnt' it frosty white in the head then? Is it only a breeding character after all, or is it something only older males have, making this one a young adult? Other species are Heermann's Gull, Blue-footed Booby and very likely a young Brown Booby.
Two young birds. There was a good number of young birds present today, but thinking about the total number of birds, in their hundreds, there should have been more if all birds were breeding at the same time, why I think they do not.
Young bird with the dark bluish bill and the all brown plumage. Was sitting quietly along the pier on the Isla de Piedra side of the harbor, probably sick.
